Today, despite of my studies in the waiting list, I decided to wander around IBM island on Second Life to kill my boredom and get ready to study.
When I teleported to the island at first, I saw the big model of IBM area on second life in front of me. The model shows the structure of the area and names written on each structure. I was stunned with the design and look of the area.
And behind me its IBM Recruitment which seems a circular area with seats surrounding it from all directions.
The model shows the name of each area, when I click on the area it shows me the way to that area with an arrow in the screen and a mark on the map.
My first destination is Virtual Universe Community. The area is very huge, on my way I passed through IBM Theater as you can see in the screenshot. It’s like a conference area with a huge screen on the middle of the area.
As I entered the target building, there was a nicely designed fountain surrounded by circular stairs which I’m standing on it as in the screenshot.
Just next to me is the Guildmaster office to contact the community’s Guildmaster Boris Frampton. No one was on the office and there was a note on the table written on it the email address of the guildmaster.
I went up all the way to the end of the stairs, it is the conference room. In the board/screen, as you can see in the pictures, a schedule for next meeting is 14th June with some key points. Now its July so it seems it’s outdate!

Finally my two books from amazon arrived yesterday! I ordered four books two weeks ago from amazon.com, and two of them arrived yesterday which are Worx’s Adobe Flex 2 Professional and ActionScript 3.0 Cookbook. I can’t wait to read it.
Three weeks ago I had a week off. It’s the week between second semaster and summer. I finished reading two books on that week (I wish I had more of these weeks), which are Friends of ED The Essential Guide to Flex 2 With Actionscript 3.0 by Charles E. Brown, and Principles of Beautiful Web Design by Jason Beaird.
The Flex book is pretty good for Flex starters, but it isn’t good enough for advanced users and for reference. The web design books is about what you should think about before designing a web page. However, you don’t need any experience on designing a web page to read the book before begining to design a website. In addition, the book is very good for web design experts. It describes some concept which doesn’t cross your mind even after years of experience on designing web pages. It goes deep to talk about the concept of layout design, colors, fonts, and textures… etc.
What’s next?
Well, I’m currently reading two books and already half the way throught the first book. The first one is Object Oriented PHP Concept and Code by Peter Lavin which talks about OOP way to code on PHP5. Inspit of my experience on PHP4, this book is pretty good for who wants to upgrade to PHP5 and design web systems that uses OOP heavly. The second book (Still at early stages) is Foundation Actionscript 3.0 Making Things Moves by Keith Peter.
I have been reading lesser last two week because summer semaster is consuming alot of my time. I hardly can find enough time to read. However, I’m also playing some games (as always) but just few hours a week. I can’t wait to finish these books to start reading what I ordered from amazon!! (There are still two books I preordered on the way! damn!).
I have been working on some projects lately for my classes and others for money. One of the project I was doing is a web based program for senior students project on Petruleom Engineering department. The goal of the program is to find how long the oil will last in Kuwait. In addition, the program should find the maximum production and the year of maximum production.
So far it seems easy, but the hard part is coming.. drawing the chart!. Okay, that sounds easy for me at the begining, but after thinking for awhile I realize that will consume time. I start by looking for an open source of a chart program. Searching for over 12hours for charting program on JAVA or ActionScript. All I can find are the ones you have to pay ALOT of money just to make one. Therefore, I decided to make the charting program from scratch.
Adobe Flash’s Actionscript 2 was the language I decided to use for the program. The reason is because I’m going to make the program a web based program which loads on a webpage and works there. Java was my second option because first I’m more experienced on ActionScript than Java, and second because I didn’t have much time to waste on a language I’m less experienced in since final exam was close.
The first kind of graph/chart needed is “scattered xy” with a linear regression line. Arrghh, looking for linear regression equation really exhausted me because I was using the wrong term when searching for it for many hours. I’ll take about it in details in coming posts.
The second kind of the chart is scattered xy with nonlinear regression curve. But I won’t figure out this curve’s equation, I’ll just use the given data to draw the curve. Its almost the same as the first graph idea in coding, just needed to include few more stuffs.
